If you are a system user, you may not be aware of some of the SUS benefits offered, check this post.

Here in Brazil, we have the Health Unic System, known as SUS, created in September 1988, with the objective of full access, guaranteeing free health services to Brazilian citizens.

The system since then has been offering different types of services ranging from prevention up until more complex treatments, which can be of a very high value in particular system cases.

Even so, some people do not have access or are not aware of the variety of activities offered by the plan.

Check out 7 of the services available that you may not know about yet.


1 Meditation and Yoga – Providing 19 alternative therapeutic treatments.

For example, yoga, meditation, homeopathy, ayurveda, music therapy, reiki and more.

About 28 % of the Basic Health Units offer this type of integrative and complementary practice.

2 Surgery for sex determination– The SUS has been offering this treatment to those patients who wish to undergo sex reassignment.

Performing reconstructive breast plastic surgery, mastectomy, thyroplasty (which changes voice timbre), and sex reassignment surgery.

In addition, being able to do hormone therapy, and pre-op consultations.

3 Surgery for women who have suffered violence– This procedure treats genitourinary system, breast surgeries, ear reconstructions, lips, nose, jaw, jaw, treatment of extensive lesions with loss of skin substance and cranial reconstruction, in addition to gingiva and surgical treatment of recto-vaginal fistula.

4 Treatment for Hepatitis C– People who have hepatitis C in grades F3 and F4 will also be able to receive the drugs sofosbuvir, simprevir and declatasvir, used to cure the disease.

5 HPV vaccine- This vaccine is offered to girls aged 9 to 15 years and boys aged 11 to 15 years.

6 Medicinal plants- Since 2010, the Farmácia Viva Program has offered mint, mastic, aloe, sacred mask, guaco, willow, plantain, among others.

7- PEP and PrEP to HIV- Strategically to prevent HIV cases, SUS offers Post-Exposure Prophylaxis, used after sexual exposure with another person who has an active virus.
