The disease is transmitted through the air, when an infected person coughs or sneezes, and another person inhales the bacteria.

Symptoms of tuberculosis include a persistent cough, sometimes with blood, fatigue, fever, night sweats, weight loss and poor appetite.

However, some people can have the infection without showing any symptoms.

The diagnosis of tuberculosis is usually made using blood or skin tests, chest x-rays, and sputum tests.

Treatment involves the use of medications antibiotics for an extended period of time, usually six months or more, to eliminate the infection.

Although tuberculosis can be fatal if left untreated, most people who receive proper treatment can recover completely.

It is important for people who have symptoms of tuberculosis to seek medical attention immediately and follow their doctor's prescribed treatment guidelines to prevent further spread of the disease.

This World Day to Combat Tuberculosis will be celebrated on Friday (24) and will be held by the Secretary of State for Health (SES).

Only the most serious cases that need follow-up by specialists are referred to secondary or tertiary reference services.
